why I e-mailed Henry's teacher today

Because when I try to ask Henry a (to me) simple question about his day, here's what I get:

G: Henry, did you eat the Spongebob Cheez-Its I packed in your lunch today? (Always hoping to stumble upon something new that he will eat.)

H: I didn't eat them.

G: Oh, well, where are they then? Did you throw them away?

H: No.

G: What happened to them?

H: Mr. J took them.

G: Mr. J took your Spongebob Cheez-Its? Did he trade you for something else?

H: Yes.

G: What did he trade you?

H: The Spongebob Cheez-Its.

(Bill laughs from the other room and then takes a stab at it): What did Mr. J give you to trade for your Spongebob Cheez-Its?

H: Nothing.

G: So what happened to your Spongebob Cheez-Its?

H: I threw them away.
_______________

Not that I need a note home every day about whether he ate his lunch or not, but I would just like a summary of the school day that has not been passed through the Henry translation screen.

He did tell us about art class yesterday. They drew lines: "jagged lines were mountains, wavey lines were water, swirly lines were clouds" (he worked on the word swirly for a bit).

And he showed us an injury on the palm of his hand: "I was so excited to get my cupcakes! But I fell." It sounds like he slipped and fell to the floor while hurrying over to get his birthday treat to share. Can you stand it?

Very funny -

I know what you mean about trying to understand what's happened based on your child's account. Foster's really grumpy about school by the time I pick him up at the end of the day, so I get a lot of "I don't like..." sentences from him.

I'm threatening to install a video camera in his classroom so I can find out for myself what's going on there FOR REAL - not according to Foster, his teacher or his wraparound!

Oh dearie me. I never know whether to try the yes / no answers to aim for accuracy or whether to ask wider questions that get to the heart of the matter?

Thank goodness for school communication!

Cheers

Yes, but my favorite is when you explain to your teacher that you need more details because your child can't tell you about their day. It never fails...the brilliant response..."My kids were the same way...they always said that they did nothing!"

NOT THE SAME THING!

Ugh! Good luck. I have to agree with pixiemama about the video camera.

Hmmmm...I hope you get better information from school than I used to get for Nik! But, it's probably better than the Henry filter, that's true! LOL

Hope the boo-boo on the hand isn't too bad. :-( xo

Oh, and FWIW, I have the same difficulty sometimes when talking to MY HUSBAND!! LOL (I wish I were kidding; I am not.)

We have those same chats over here. And like MWAM says, the teachers don't actually get it, they fail to grasp the subtle differences between our kids not telling us anything, and other kids. The part that worries me about my son, though, is that he is so incredibly forthcoming about other things, and yet, with school, not so much.

Hope you get a detailed reply and that Henry's teacher gets your need for, and the importance of, communication from here on out.

Conor's recap always starts in the middle of the story: "But, it was raining." Uh, okay. I'm grateful for the correspondence that I get from his teacher!

I hope Henry's hand's okay. What a hoot!

Today after school T. guiltily confessed that he's been using the money on his lunch account to buy snacks all week. I wanted to know why his lunch came home uneaten today ... turns out he filled up on a smorgasbord of snacks .... here's a question ... nice huh?

I have the same thing here. T. does NOT want to answer ANY questions about his day immediately after school. In fact, he gets really annoyed when a teacher or specialist/therapist tries to speak to me in the hallway at pickup time.

His reports are always murky. Thank goodness for his daily behavior chart .... at least it's something.

Can you tell I was distracted while typing this comment? Sorry about that.

I get very accurate and astute recounts of the day...in pieces...during different parts of the day...not necessarily in order.

Sometimes it's like a freakin' Altman film...

I would be worrying worrying and wondering. Shouldn't the school explain about what happened to his hand? Maybe it's all nothing but I am a worrywort!
