just one thing before I go...

We are packing the car to head up to the family house on the lake for a week. But I wanted to pose a question-- I got a call today from the private autism school that I mentioned a few months ago- the one we've been on the waiting list for since Henry was like 4 years old. They would like to "interview" us on Tuesday, the 22nd. So anyone with any suggestions for me, please chime in. Anything I should be sure to ask or sure to look for?

See you in a week--

Hey! Thanks for updating us on your visit to the stay at home mom side :-) It must be so nice that your parents can take the boys and give you a REAL vacation!

I think I remember you writing a post one time about how you wished his teachers would try to use some of his special interests as teaching tools. Maybe that could be the start of a good conversation about how they will engage and motivate Henry to learn. ...

Eek! Too many to list, but first on the list would probably be 'what system do they use to communicate with parents daily?'

Have a super break!

Cheers

have a great time!

the only thing i can say is listen to your gut. that will never steer you wrong.

the things that would matter to me are: sensory breaks, sensory activities, small class size, declarative communication style more so than imperative, meaningful structure (not all this waiting waiting waiting on the blue line etc), and a very clear sense of how they respond when children are struggling or have done something 'wrong', ie, how do they handle and view 'teaching' moments?

but mostly i think it boils down to whether their philosophy and understanding of autism is close enough to mine in order for me to feel confident and comfortable AND that the teacher be gifted, you know, that she (or he) has that ability to really SEE the child.

good luck! i'll be sending my best vibes!

You need to message Salome. She'll have an arsenal of questions (and the proper buzz words to go with them).

Have a great trip!
